Hidden Moving Fees to Watch For

The most common hidden moving fees come from long carries, stairs, bulky or oversized items, and last-minute add-ons that weren’t part of the original quote. At Lambert & Son Moving, we don’t tack on surprise charges — if you’re ever unsure what something might cost, you can ask us anything, and we’ll walk you through it before your move day, not after.

Not every moving company hides fees on purpose, but moving pricing has enough moving parts that extra charges can catch people off guard if they weren’t explained clearly from the start. Here’s what to watch for when you’re comparing movers — and how we handle each one differently.

Long-carry fees. If the truck can’t park close to the door, some movers charge extra for the added distance and time. We walk your specific property with you (in person or by video) beforehand, so long-carry distance is factored into your quote from the start — not added afterward.

Stair and elevator fees. Carrying furniture up flights of stairs or navigating a slow or reserved elevator takes more time and labor. We ask about your building layout upfront so this is already built into your estimate.

Bulky item surcharges. Pianos, safes, pool tables, and oversized furniture often need special equipment or extra crew. It’s a legitimate cost — and one we always quote ahead of time, never after the item is already on the truck.

Fuel and travel fees. Some movers add a flat travel fee or fuel surcharge, especially outside their usual service area. If this applies to your move, we’ll tell you before you book, not on the invoice.

Last-minute add-ons. Extra boxes, more packing materials, or a change in what’s being moved can affect a final price with some companies. With us, if your move changes, just tell us — we’ll adjust the quote together instead of surprising you at the end.

Cancellation or rescheduling fees. Ask any mover about this policy before booking. Ours is straightforward, and we’re happy to explain it plainly, no fine print.

The best protection against hidden fees isn’t luck — it’s a mover who’s willing to answer every question you have before the job starts. That’s how we operate at Lambert & Son.

Lambert & Son Moving offers transparent, upfront pricing for every move across Santa Cruz, Santa Clara, and Monterey counties. No hidden fees, no fine print — and no question is off-limits. Get your personalized quote today.
